Web of Science
From K-State Libraries Wiki
How to export citations out of Web of Science (including Science Citation Index, Social Science Citaiton Index, Humanities Citation Index, CAB Abstracts) and into RefWorks.
One citation at a time:
- Click on the Get It button
- From the Get It window, click on Save/Edit citation in RefWorks
- If you are not already logged into RefWorks, you will be taken to the RefWorks log in page, log into your RefWorks account
- The citation information will be added to your RefWorks account
The Get It button will only retrieve basic citation information. It will not include the abstract, descriptors, or other information you may get if you choose one of the other options below.
When selecting citations from one page only:
- Mark the records you want to export
- Go to the bottom of the screen to the Output Records box.
- Make sure that whether you're sending selected records, or All records, or a range of records, that the button is clicked next to that option.
- Under step 2, select either the Author/Title/Source option or Full Record (personally, I prefer Full Record)
- Under Step 3, select Save to . . . .other reference software
- Click the Save button
- A new screen will appear. With a small pop-up window. The pop-up asks you what it should do with the CGI file. Choose Save to Disk. Click OK.
- Go to your RefWorks account.
- Go to References/Import.
- Choose ISI (Institute for Scientific Information) as the Import Filter/Data Source
- Choose Web of Knowledge as the Database
- If you want to import the references into a specific folder, choose it from the drop-down menu.
- Choose Import Data from the following Text File. Click Browse to find that file you just saved (on your computer, it may be on the Desktop. If you are using a computing lab computer, it is probably in the Temp Drive and it may be inside a Downloads folder in that Temp Drive.)
- When you find the file, click Open
- Click Import
- Magic happens
Step 7 may be slightly different if your web browser has a pop-up blocker. Usually, there is a bar at the top of your screen that says something about a pop-up being blocked, but you can click here (and then click on "here") to download/open the file. Go ahead and choose that if it happens. The file will not longer be a CGI file, but will be a jumble of letters and numbers, like CA984FS.
When selecting citations from multiple pages or searches:
- Click on the box to the left of any article that you will be exporting to RefWorks
- Click on the Add to Marked List button towards the top of the search results, this will add the records that you marked on that page to a folder. (The records will stay in that folder for the duration of your search session or until you remove them yourself. If you leave Web of Science and come back later, they will no longer be in the folder for you. See My EndNote Web, below, for a longer term solution.)
- When you're ready to export the citations, click on the Marked List link at the very top of the screen (it should have a number after it indicating how many records you have marked.)
- Under Step 1: Click the boxes for the fields you want to be exported to RefWorks at the very least, check:
- Author
- Title
- Source
- Abstract
- Source Abbreviation
- Under Step 2:
- Make sure Field Tagged is selected from the first drop down menu
- Select other Bibliographic Software from the second drop down menu
- Click the Save to File button
- A popup window will appear asking if you want to open the file or save to Disk. Choose Save to Disk. It will save the file to your default download location.
