Hale Library Food and Drink Policy

Hale Library is your facility for study, research, and intellectual discovery, and our hope is that you feel comfortable here.   We recognize that being able to eat and drink while you work allows you to make better use of your time.   Hale Library’s food and drink policy has been relaxed to accommodate you. We ask that you take care of your library by being considerate of the building and your fellow students. Also, please be aware that other library facilities on campus may have different policies related to food and drink.

Hale Library Food and Drink Policy

  • Food and drink are permitted in all areas of the Library except Special Collections/Archives on the 5th floor and rooms 407 and 408.
  • Drinks should have a secure lid to minimize spills.
  • If you spill or see a mess left behind, please let a staff member know right away.
  • Please dispose of wrappers and containers in the available trash cans.
  • No coffeepots or cooking appliances are allowed.
  • No deliveries, please.

Vending machines for food and drink are available in the 24-hour study on the ground floor. A café is also available on the ground floor for coffee, soft drinks, sandwiches, salads, bakery goods, and snacks.

Libraries have unique concerns about food and drink:

  • Vermin - where there is food, rodents and insects follow. These pests literally chew up books, or discolor, stain and loosen pages and destroy bindings. Some cockroaches are suspected of being disease carriers and can cause allergic reactions in humans.
  • Mold - spills, empty cups, cans, and wrappers provide an ideal environment for mold spores, and mold is deadly for books. Fungal growth is highly contagious: one wet book can send mildew growth through an entire collection in a short period of time.

Please be good stewards of Hale Library and its collections by being responsible with library materials here in Hale and with materials you take home.
