Tips for finding artists in the K-State Libraries Catalog: (to search for books, DVDs, etc.)
Begin at the K-State Libraries homepage (www.lib.k-state.edu/), and select "Catalog" from the list of "quick links" at the top of the screen.
- Guided Keyword Search: works well when you do not know where to begin. Try entering some search terms and when you find a title that seems appropriate, use the information in that record to help you refine your search.
- Author Search: search for an artist by his/her last name. This will provide a list of materials containing information on an artist either as the primary subject or where an artist is mentioned within a general text or a broader concept (such as an artistic movement).
- Subject Heading Search: again, search for an artist by his/her last name. This will generate a list of Library of Congress Subject Headings that relate specifically to this artist. Click on the number to the left of the Subject Heading for a list of results. Also, this works with artistic movements. Try "Impressionism". Here's a list of sample subject headings for artist Pablo Picasso:
Picasso, Pablo 1881-1973
Picasso, Pablo 1881-1973 Catalogs
Picasso, Pablo 1881-1973 Criticism and Interpretation
Picasso, Pablo 1881-1973 Exhibitions
Picasso, Pablo 1881-1973 Guernica
- When you find a promising title, click on the Subject Headings listed on the record for that item, and follow those headings to find more materials on similar topics.
- Location: You can limit your catalog search results to materials located in the Curriculum Materials Center or the Juvenile Literature Collection by choosing the "Advanced Search Limits" and selecting either from the list beside "Location". Then, run a keyword search for your topic.
- To ensure you're able to view all available information, click on "full view" when looking at the record for an item in the catalog.
- When you have your call numbers ready, see the Hale Library Stacks Guide and the Map of Hale Library.
Tips for Browsing K-State Libraries' locations:
Call Numbers: It is much easier to browse the various library locations if you know what the call numbers mean. A majority of the art-related resources (books & older issues of magazines/journals) are located in the "N" call number range (3rd floor, Hale), but Ceramics, Photography, Textiles and some crafts are located on the 1st floor in Room 117. These topics have artistic as well as scientific & technological applications. Other helpful call number ranges:
- N = Visual Arts (General)</li>
- NA = Architecture</li>
- NB = Sculpture</li>
- NC = Drawing, Design, Illustration</li>
- ND = Painting</li>
- NE = Print Media</li>
- NK = Decorative Arts (includes some ceramics, metalwork, etc.)</li>
- NX = Arts in general (includes multimedia, religious arts, arts patronage, etc.)</li>
- TP = Ceramics</li>
- TR = Photography</li>
- TT = Arts & Crafts, Handicrafts</li>
- For more specific information, see the LC Classification Outline here: http://www.itsmarc.com/crs/LCSO0001.htm</li>
