Information for Faculty, Staff and Students Regarding
Permitted Uses of the ARTstor Digital Library
Authorized Users (K-State students, faculty, staff, walk-in patrons) "may reproduce, distribute, display and make performances"1 of ARTstor content for educational and/or scholarly uses including:
- classroom instruction activities
- student assignments and research
- research activities of faculty, scholars, and curators
- public display or performance for noncommercial scholarly or educational presentations (seminar, class, lecture, conference, exhibit, or workshop
- non-public displays of student, faculty, or curatorial portfolios
- in research or a dissertation
- reproductions of a dissertation may only be "for personal use, library deposit, and/or use solely within the institution(s) with which the Authorized User and/or his or her faculty or curatorial readers are affiliated..."2

Printing / Reproducing
- print only what is reasonably necessary
- reproduce limited quantities
- printed materials may only be made available to authorized users and "audience members at a scholarly or educational presentation, lecture, seminar, or similar activity"3
- printed materials may be made available to individuals with whom an authorized user has need for "collaboration, comment, or similar educational or scholarly use"4
Downloading
- download only what is reasonably necessary
- downloaded content may only be shared with authorized users and with a limited number of "scholars, researchers, or curators to whom work by an Authorized User that incorporates ARTstor Content is made available for purposes of collaboration, comment, or similar educational or scholarly use..."5
Fair Use, Educational, and Other Exceptions to the US Copyright Laws
- some ARTstor content is in the public domain or produced by the U.S. government and may be used freely without seeking permission
